SWEET GUM BALLS--REMOVAL
No chemical control is currently labeled in Illinois for preventing the
formation of sweet gum balls. No control is available to cause the balls
to abort at a young age.
The only control to prevent sweet gum balls from forming is a chain
saw used at ground level.
Some research has shown that NAA (Naphthalene Acetic Acid) will cause
some abortion. However, the compound is costly and hard to apply, and as
stated, not registered for use in Illinois.
