SOD WEBWORMS

Sod webworms feed on the crown of grass plants. The cigar-shaped, brown insects are the larval stage of a white/buff colored moth. Moths may be present during June, usually in the evening as one walks across the lawn. Larva form silken tunnel-shaped "webs" in the grass.

Dead patches of grass occurring in July and early August may indicate sod webworm presence. An abundance of birds in the early morning on lawns may also signify sod webworm nearby.

Control is lightly watered in as opposed to deep watering for grubs. Check the current Urban Pest Control Manual for recommendations.

Sod webworm damaged turf comes out of the turf "like hair from a shedding dog".
