LOCUST--INSECTS
Locust are NOT found in the United States, but in Australia, the Middle
East and Africa. Commonly assumed to be locust are cicadas. Cicadas are
usually found in trees during the summer after emerging from their shells
and creating what some people describe as an obnoxious chirping, piercing,
grating sound from dusk to dawn. Others love the sound. In Australia, during
summer, the noise of cicadas can be so intense as to drown out the sound
of passing traffic on a busy highway.
